Somewhere Between Something and Nothing

Objects make up our surroundings, satisfy our needs and desires, and influence our identities. As important communicators of the present, how they are perceived by society is a reflection of the systems we function within. The language we use to describe objects is a valuable indicator of their meaning — object, thing, stuff, something, nothing. The mass production of objects today transforms them into meaningless stuff. It is in this abyss of stuff that I find raw material for sculptural form. To remove them from the absurd cycles of consumption, I reimagine the meaning of objects. Through assemblage and encasement within layers of textile, can the familiar become something unimaginable? Can it develop its own identity outside of functional intention? Can objects become something else or nothing at all?
